Dear Parent(s) or Guardian(s),
We are excited to announce that Spectrum Academy is implementing Learning to BREATHE, a well-researched, mindfulness-based curriculum for classroom or group settings. With the impact of stress on our students and increasing symptoms of anxiety & depression, we see the need for providing our students and school community with tools to develop greater attention, self-awareness, emotional regulation, compassion, adaptability, and resilience. Adolescence is a unique time when intense emotions often arise and more mature coping skills are needed.
Mindfulness, which is a type of attention or awareness training that involves becoming aware of one’s present-moment experience with compassion and openness as a basis for wise action, is a skill that, when practiced regularly, has been shown to lead to a greater ability to handle stress.
Through a course of 6 lessons, occurring about once per month, your child will be taught mindfulness practices that are designed to increase attention and emotion regulation through awareness of the body, thoughts, and emotions, as well as practices that strengthen feelings of gratitude and compassion for self and others.
We hope to include as many students in this program as possible. Additionally, we will be evaluating the effectiveness of the mindfulness program by administering a pre/post-survey. However, if you would NOT like for your child to participate in this program and complete these pre/post surveys, please indicate so below, and there will be alternative activities for them to complete.
We value your participation and support as we continue to cultivate community resilience. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this curriculum, feel free to send these inquiries to aubrey.cooper@spectrumcharter.org.
